  The way hardwood togs are cut to create the top layer is key to flooring quality. Logs can be rotary-cut, sliced-cut, or sawn. Many floors are rotary-cut, resulting in the
unattractive look of plywood graining. The wood fibers break as the veneer is peeled. Over time, the weakened fibers may crack and cause surface checking.
